There were a ton of great signs at Gameday.

1. I WOKE up early for this

2. We love Cal Rushing Touchdowns (CRT)

3. Redistribute The Wins

4. This was a hobo camp before Gameday showed up

5. You are blocking the library

6. Cam Wards pronouns are Heis/Man

7. I thought this was a protest

The best thing the left could do for the brand is keep up this type of self reflective humor, lefty policies are more popular than the right they just have a marketing problem.

HA, lefties like free stuff and don’t want to do anything. The majority of people want to take the easy way out and have stuff handed to them. That’s the reason you could come to this conclusion.

Nah most “lefties” are hard working people who just want everyone to have a fair chance at a good life. The “lazy welfare mooch who wants to be lazy and scam the system” is a caricature you’ve been sold through right wing propaganda

Somewhere in a suburban New Jersey sensory deprivation chamber, an old quarterback stirs.

The weight of forgotten seasons presses against his tired frame, his limbs floating in the still waters of the chamber. He struggles to open his eyes, but darkness lingers, thicker than the liquid that cradles him.

A whisper slips past his cracked lips—faint, almost inaudible.

“Calgorithm.”

I think the Cal woke jokes dealt with older issues that are no longer relevant to the most hard core activists. I'm not so sure you could make more topical jokes/puns without getting angry pushback from those same students. Would GameDay show a sign that says "Globalize the Caltifada"? I'm thinking that's a bit too current to go over well.

The people who would do that type of protest don't care much about sportsball, and would much rather protest Rosh Hashanah services or some random Jews eating lunch at a deli. That's how you go viral!

I was there! As a Miami grad, I sort of assumed the fans would be soft, Birkenstocked people who joked about loving the ball score (implying they weren’t football fans). I didn’t find this at all! The fans in my section were knowledgeable and friendly, and played into the new Calgorithm rep. Great trip.

Definitely would not get the same reaction if the sides were flipped. Conservatives like to have fun and can take a joke. The left… not so much

The left is significantly more fragile and unable to actually debate etc. Their arguments tend to focus much more on emotion and feeling and not logic. This is why they scream racism, misogyny, nazi, etc…bc there is usually very little or zero logic to their argument.

That's false. When GOAT POTUS put up the cat meme after immigrants got caught BBQing pets, lefties mostly got mad. It was a far cry from conservatives' reaction to the Calgorithm memes

Except immigrants weren't eating pets... it was just another racist lie. Same old playbook from the past 8 years and his followers are either too racist or too dumb to figure it out.

Benjamin Miller's avatar

First of all, you've proven my point.

And for the record there is video, taken well before the reports made national news, of cats being BBQ'd on an outdoor grill in a town near Springfield OH. (And it was a Black American guy who took the video.) There are eyewitness reports of immigrants carrying geese home from local parks in Springfield

Normally here I find myself arguing with PW because of the dumb things he usually says, but today you are beating for dumbassery by a mile.

I don't know whether I should start with what or why...

Wtf are you talking about with geese here? Are geese pets? Who cares if (assuming it's even true) a couple immigrants may have grabbed some geese? Sometimes Americans shoot or fish w/o a license...slap a fine on them, wtf does this have to do with immigration unless you somehow know this is a huge, unsolvable problem with immigrants?

And again, assuming (big big if) that some Haitians were really BBQ'ing a cat and you haven't been duped by a doctored or sketchy video that you just wanted to believe in...well then arrest those particular people. We have 40 million immigrants and almost 300 million US-born citizens. What does it prove if a few did something messed up?

Also fwiw, lefties I know were definitely laughing when GOAT POTUS said that.

Samuel Stalls's avatar

It is not clear that cats are being grilled in the video you are referring to and whatever was being grilled, those doing the grilling were not immigrants from the area people claimed it was, so you can't count it as evidence.

Also, white people in rural areas poach animals illegally all the time.

Do people really think kids who go to a state school that has a power 5 football team are woke?

Expand full comment
Phillip's avatar

I don't know if I would consider Cal a state school. Either way, it is a lot woker than other state school, but less woke than its reputation. It is still a place where it is woke enough to where students are going to be hesitant to say anything negative in public about certain "woke agendas."

It still has the reputation of being a far left-leaning school, and because of that reputation, it still brings many of those types of students. I drove by the campus 2 days ago and there was a huge Israel protest. I sometimes work/interact with students and a lot of them wear Free Palestine pins or stickers. I bet you find more trans and queer students at Cal than at other state schools. Even if people don't come to the school with those beliefs, there's a lot of pressure on campus to adopt them.

With that being said, Cal is a huge school with an undergrad population of more than 20k. There's the frat bros, the nerds who are looking to get good grades and go to med school, and there's the ones trying to get into the HAAS undergrad business school. I would bet many, if not most of the above, have conservative leanings that they can't announce publicly because Cal is still a liberal school with students who will shame you for having conservative beliefs.

It's woker than a place like Ohio State, University of Florida, or even UCLA. But there are a good amount of non-woke students who keep their conservative beliefs to themselves.

Cal is unique in that it is an extremely elite public school that by law has strict admission standards and rules where admittance is based 90% on grades and test scores. So, the vast majority of students that go there are there to keep their heads down and study.

Does it still more woke than the average public school 100% but when you compare it to other elite universities and private liberal arts schools, it is not even close to the top anymore. Look at the war protests at all of the ivies and compare that to Cal, before Cal would be the center of the protests, now it is just average.

Yeah… no. Some neurotics taking baby steps in acknowledging that you can be less than earnest towards your sacred cows is something, but it’s a very small something. Over the last 15 years the struggle sessions were located in a very specific blue educated professional class socio-economic space. ACC bros busting balls is not a “thaw.” ACC bros were always busting balls. They will continue to bust balls.

A thaw would be the Berkeleys in a group being the *majority* and yet going no farther than good natured ball busting mockery when dealing with outlier heretics.
