Part 3: Did Reporters Disrupt the JJ Redick Hiring Process?
Schemes and Woj/Shams intrigue abound in the conclusion of this Laker saga
Funny stuff on Thursday. The job long rumored to be offered to JJ Redick was, wouldn’t ya know it? Suddenly actually offered to him, out of nowhere, supposedly.
So begins and ends Part 3, the final chapter in our trilogy. Our saga concludes with the Lakers giving the HC job to JJ Redick on Thursday, 16 days after Shams Charania reported in the Athletic that this move was imminent. The move indeed was imminent, but within this 16 day span, there were many twists and turns, including a surprise publicized offer of the job to UCONN coach Dan Hurley.
I’ve still got some questions and a few answers. This was a story unlike the others. I’d hazard that a lot of Laker fans sense something’s off with how this has been reported, even if they don’t know exactly what. One of the reasons the story hasn’t quite been unspooled to the public is due to an omertà of sorts: Official media is incredibly wary of discussing official media. But what if the media, specifically Adrian Wojnarowski and Shams Charania, caused some of what occured with the Lakers here? What if the news breakers are influential enough to make choices that actually change the news? I believe it happened in this case. Allow me to speculate, recklessly.
