This Vrabel/Russini Story Just Won’t Go
TMZ Boat Bombshell: Will Vrabel Sail Away from New England?
Well, now there’s video via TMZ, which somehow tends to make public perception of a scandalous incident much worse.
The Vrabel/Russini story won’t go away, even if much of the NFL media apparatus wants it to. Mike Florio at NBC’s ProFootballTalk stands out as an exception for just describing the news as it develops. That’s ironic considering he went viral for warning Chris Simms with, “stay on target” when Simms brought the matter up on PFT Live. Shortly after that moment, NBC announced Simms would no longer be part of their Football Night in America pregame show. I don’t believe these happenings are at all connected, but we’ve already established I can be naive on matters Vrabel/Russini.
On Wednesday, and this would be easy to miss if you relied purely on sports media for sports news, TMZ reported a surprise finding from 2021. From the Florio recap:
It’s impossible to know whether the situation involving Patriots coach Mike Vrabel and NFL reporter Dianna Russini will result in Vrabel stepping down as coach of the Patriots (or, possibly, taking a leave of absence for the 2026 season), because it’s always possible that more information will come to light.
Vrabel stepping down as coach? Now that’s quite a possibility to raise, even if you’re saying it’s impossible to predict. The Patriots just turned their whole franchise around and went to the Super Bowl. We’ll return to this topic. Florio continues:
TMZ reports that Vrabel and Russini rented a boat together in June 2021, in Tennessee. The report includes a copy of the waiver they both signed, and a photo taken by Vrabel with staff members at the boat rental company. (Russini, per the report, declined to be photographed with staff.)
In June 2021, Russini — who is married — was pregnant with her first child.
To state the obvious, this doesn’t look good. Russini’s first child shares Vrabel’s first name. Shortly after giving birth she tweeted:
Keep looking at my almost 4 day old son Michael while trying to figure out who are the best Michaels to ever play and coach in the NFL?
There’s no proof of the outcome this information intuitively conjures, and yet, again, it doesn’t look good. Families and kids are impacted, but as of now, we don’t know if what’s really impacting them is public speculation or the actual truth the (non football) media is uncovering.
This is all ugly and, theoretically, none of our business. It’s easy enough to say all that, but such a proclamation doesn’t end the story, now does it? Plenty of influential people have tried to kill this news item. Former Russini employer ESPN prefers to bury the infamous scandal in boring.
