Impressive appearance! When Bill really trusts the guest he will sometimes put them on the spot with a few random questions. You aced this section. The “quickly come up with a hot take” part of the interview can leave most guests twisting, but you didn’t break a sweat.

Is infamous commenter/gasbag “JF” going to show his face, or this community going to just keep it moving and pretend like him (and plenty others in the House of Strauss community) weren’t loud wrong about the rights deals?

I just heard JF on the r/billsimmons podcast (yes, it's a podcast about a subreddit).

All the simps are crying on Twitter about Ethan’s flaming hot take that WNBA teams should share team names with NBA teams (e.g. W Pacers)…softer than baby shit, keep spitting Ethan

That clown magary gave one of those sad posts a RT today. God forbid there’s a discussion on one of the most influential basketball pods about how to increase awareness of the WNBA. Chickenshit “oh how hard is it to learn 12 nouns”. Yeah that’s the problem. Less than .1% of America knew the Indiana Fever before Clark showed up. That’s a fact. How do we solve that. Nope nobody is allowed to talk about this shit and how to improve it just a bunch of dumb men. Some people try to build and improve things and other people are just sad and try to tear others down for having the audacity to try something different. Fuck them.

Yeah, I think it's part of this "eat your vegetables" mindset around women's sports (and soccer).

We're not going to make it easy for you. We're not going to spoon-feed you. You're going to have to work for it.

But this is supposed to be fun? No, this is justice! This is what the rest of the world except for you backwards Americans likes!

Honestly, I think Margary and others would be happier if the WNBA stayed at its current level and they could sneer about how misogynist society is.

Whaaaaat? I assumed this was a solid and uncontroversial take, didn't even think twice about it. Seems ridiculous to me the women's teams DON'T share the name of the men's team. Marketing 101 anyone?

I agree with Ethan… women’s football in europe is doing well b/c of this. Barca fans are loyal to the club and it’s beneficial to the women’s game

Mashup of two of my favourite pods!

One thought on the nba deal is that it can be explained by a theory from finance professor Bruce Greenwald. He states that dominant players in shrinking markets actually experience an increase in pricing power because this both dissuades new entrants and causes less dominant competitors to exit thus causing supply to fall faster than demand. You can make a clear case that this is what has happened with the nba. They have an experienced a precipitous decline in viewership but it is less precipitous than just about all of their competitors and therefore the marginal viewer has dramatically increased in value.

Cole Robillard's avatar

Also meant to add demand may have even increased because of new buyers eg amazon

Also tv add spending hasn’t fallen nearly as fast as viewership and I’d bet the nba is able to deliver an audience within desirable demographics that few of its competitors can. I don’t think these deals are done primarily based on gut and ego. Although I’m sure that does come into play too

I work in television and this is spot on and why you can't just rely on ratings for the relative health/value of the league. I don't think I read one NBA ratings doomer article that took a serious look at the sales/advertising component.

Cole Robillard's avatar

Interesting how these things all come back to micro economics 101, supply and demand curves. And advertisers are ultimately the customers

Your hit on 95.7 a couple days ago was solid too. Tweet out those links

This pod is more evidence that you are better as a shooting guard.

What if not only were the WNBA teams the Lady Lakers and Lady Pacers but they were exclusively outfitted in the best throwbacks their respective teams ever had?

Good pod on the changing media landscape in sports. So NFL.com and NBA.com are not working? Follow the lead of PAC 12 network for success. As to the Peacockification of sports -Dan Wetzel was on this first relating to college football. Fans of a college team say “ our league just signed a great contract, look at all the money”! Wait I gotta subscribe to Peee Cock to watch my team?

Loved this. Bill and Ethan have a great rapport, but quite different ways of approaching things, which makes the conversation really interesting. Particularly enjoyed how they challenged one another at times. More please!

Great interview. Please do let us know for appearances.

I enjoyed it. It felt like Bill was giving you more shit than any other of his guests, outside of Russilo, which was a fun aspect.
