Real Rooney Rule Has Never Been Tried!
Perhaps the NFL should get out of the racial bureaucracy business
This winter has felt like an echo of the pre vibe shift era for mainstream sports media. We’ve seen some deviation from neutrality on political issues, plus a refocus on social causes that were largely abandoned over the past couple years. For instance, NFL media is giving a lot of focus to how no Black head coaches were hired this cycle. Big time NFL news man Albert Breer told Dan Patrick that this topic would be his number one question for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
Peter Schrager tweeted that the HC situation is “troubling” and “goes deeper.”
Schrager’s omission of Mike McDaniel from the “person of color” ranks illustrates how “race” can escape tidy definitions. McDaniel’s father is Black but nobody would ever know that without being informed. Is he actually a minority? Technically yes, per NFL rules, but then why should that status matter?
