RealGM’s website provides a service of categorizing NBA agents and their agencies. It’s up to date, a condition I’ve been thankful for over the years. Or I should say it is up to date, with the exception of Josh Giddey’s agent, due to a very interesting reason. No, it’s not the reason you might be thinking of, though that’s another topic perhaps worthy of a future HoS post. It’s a different situation entirely. Here’s the background.

Australian basketball power agent Daniel Moldovan is, at the time of this writing, listed as working with Octagon, the major agency that also represents Steph Curry. By extension, Giddey is also listed as being represented by Octagon, and I’m assuming that journalists are sending their Giddey-focused inquiries in that direction right now. Moldovan is actually not with Octagon, though, not anymore, which means that Giddey isn’t either. Why? Moldovan’s been fired by the company, officially terminated, which is quite a development in the industry.

The move surprised NBA world insiders because Moldovan is Australia’s most prominent basketball agent, by far, during a time in which the Southern Hemisphere nation has emerged as a growing talent factory. Octagon hired him in 2021 as a beachhead towards dominance in the region. By many accounts, Moldovan has done well in this role, bringing in Aussie lottery picks Dyson Daniels and the aforementioned Giddey. Dyson’s 16-year-old brother Dash is another high-level NBA prospect on the way, and you can guess who industry insiders believe he’ll be repped by.

So, given the growth opportunity, why did Octagon cut off this part of themselves? Again, it has nothing to do with Josh Giddey. Instead, it has everything to do with Israel, Hamas and Black Lives Matter.
