I was going to run a follow-up to Thursday’s China article but my thesis isn’t quite playing ball with my research. Excuses, excuses, I know.
Rather than take readers down a nowhere path, I’d prefer to share this interview I did with The Hub, a publication out in Canada. Since starting up House of Strauss roughly nine weeks ago, I’ve wanted to convey something about the experience to Subscribers. This interview does just that, in a way I wouldn’t have been able to do in article form.
Normally I turn down interviews that are culled from extemporaneous phone conversations because you never know how your words will be used. But in this case, I trust L. Graeme Smith, the interviewer. He just sort of gets me, even though we’ve never met. For instance, he saw clearly that my book, The Victory Machine, was about decadence and decline.
So is HoS about the same thing? Not necessarily, though it can be on occasion. I’m still making this all up as I go along, to be honest. I’d like to think this newsletter is more about a sense of possibility, a path out of an increasingly constrained conversation. That’s the hope, anyway, and I thank all you subscribers for making such a sentiment possible.
Wow! L. Graeme Smith's piece was really powerful! https://www.athwart.org/the-decadence-machine/
I can see why you respect him so much, Ethan. He's masterful at weaving together amazing historical pieces of work with the modern day cultural currents defined in the NBA. But, at the same time, I feel like I got to revisit your book, and I just read it a few short weeks ago. LOL! But, then again art is to the beholder. But, wow! This sir, is a piece worth re-posting, because I don't think (as the prior commenter said as well) it has gotten the love it deserves.
I'm curious as to why this post got almost no reaction at all. I understand that it's just a link to an interview, but I found the interview to be a great insight into the professional writing experience as it stands today.
