That was a great discussion. Ethan made a point that the backlash is a response to the "wrong people" criticizing Caleb, because a segment of the sports fan population criticized Caleb for his fingernail painting, feminine attire, and crying in his mom's arms after a game.
That is precisely what is going on here. I went to the Bears Reddit to see if they were discussing this article, and I had to scroll down a considerable distance to find a thread that referenced it. I found a screenshot of a tweet from Big Cat of Barstool Sports dismissing the article, saying that's the past, and this is the bright future of the Ben Johnson era now.
At 187 upvotes, one of the most popular comments: Based. Sorry that the "Caleb is a gay retard" story didn't get you the Peabody Tyler. Maybe next time.
Then the most popular (87) response to that comment: What’s sad is that you really aren’t exaggerating. You can tell he wanted to call Caleb a fag so bad.
I said this last year but I’ll shamelessly repeat myself. Caleb nail polish discourse is the same as the Giants boat picture, doesn’t matter as long as you win. Well, Caleb better hope this story doesn’t plot the same course.
Caleb could very well still be good but i’m leaning bust, and the thing that alarmed me most was the video of him receiving “the call” from his coach and GM that he was going to be taken first overall
now i know it was a given, but usually those phone calls (even in a situation where the pick is a given) usually follow a similar script where the draftee is elated, lots of times crying and usually promising big things or a promise not to let this selection go to waste.
in the video Caleb basically acts like he’s talking to an uncle who he hasn’t seen in a while but is obligated to say hi to, while the Bears brass gives off the same “recruiting” vibes mentioned on this pod. even the way he answered the phone with Poles was bizarre just like “hello? whose this?”.
You can say i’m reading way too much into this but 2 years ago, the day after the draft when i first saw that video I was a Caleb believer, and after watching the video, I immediately got bad vibes and thought to myself for the first time “this may not end well for Bears fans”
Ethan covers topics and stories that are largely not covered or are covered, but in a PR style. So doing episodes with smart people who have recently written pieces (or produced content) that fit into that bucket I think makes for a great listen.

The great thing is either you are right, or you have to fake smile through your franchise being destroyed by a gay retard.

Wow that's a big get. Let her know "Tell it to My Heart" still slaps.
Just an hour ago I watched Nick Wright praise Tyler when talking about the Bears. So I’m primed for this!
