I like this guy OK, but the "countless" people who didn't see Steph Curry play? At some point we need some actual facts with this load management argument.
I just looked up Stephs game log. Last year, age 34, he had 2 injuries that cost him about 10 games each. And he sat out 4 other games. Let's stipulate those 4 were load management (I think they actually were). 4 games out of 82 over the course of 6 months. Is this really some epidemic?
Sure Kawhi didn't play back to backs for a while. Point taken - that's like 12-13 games right there. But I'd guess most guys are like a game off every 6 weeks? Baseball players have been doing that for 100 years. I'm not saying it's great but it does seem to be an argument that rarely comes with any facts.
That bothered me a little less than the "i'm not in the media" comment. Like c'mon -- it's perfectly fine to arguehe's a better, more morally righteous, and in-touch-with-the-common-man guy that the average media person ... but he's in the fucking media. He's talks into a microphone about sports for his fuckin job, fachristsake
I wonder how much bigger you really should want this House of Strauss thing to become.
Influential people read it, you get great guests, you get to play on both sides of the political sandbox, and you (understandably) don't like getting dunked on by Twitter mobs. Self-aggregating a fun debate with Nick Wright into a clip where you are the subject of ridicule, is it worth it? I saw the clip on Bill Simmons Reditt before I even got the chance to listen and people were KILLING you.
Obviously the counter to this is: more exposure, more eyeballs, more money. But you are dipping your toes into the take arena, which is a different beast altogether for those who haven't been exposed to your excellent writing.
I remember when Simmons first showed up on NBA studio shows, my Dad HATED him because he had no relationship to the guy I had been listening to for a decade. People hate Nick Wright and Stephen A. Smith and Skip and Portnoy and everyone else, and let's face it: they are more dynamic personalities than you are. I'm sure things will continue to work out great for you, just a thought
I don’t think I self aggregated any clips of the Nick thing. Everything else I don’t have much push back for here. It’s all pretty well considered.
The bottom line is I’m trying to reach reasonable customers. Will more exposure lead to some people on Reddit hating me? Sure. But they seem to hate almost everything. I want to try things out and I don’t want to let those people hold me back. If I was concerned about them, this site would have never happened in the first place.
I just don’t understand why anyone other than the owners/players need to care about NBA viewership. Every other pod I’m being told I need to care and it doesn’t make any sense to me.
Oh no! Jaylen Brown is going to make 150 million instead of 300!!! OMG the warriors are worth 4 billion instead of 7!!
Unless you’re telling me the NBA is going to disappear and I’m not going to be able to watch Knicks games with my kid in 5-10 years...Whats the point Ethan?
The reason you might make more money even if your ratings are declining is that everyone’s ratings are declining more, and there is a narrowing range of places you can place ads that are watched live. It’s different from podcasts in that there is not an ever-diminishing inventory of podcast content.
3x for the NBA seems pretty unlikely but I think it will increase because the NBA will sacrifice some visibility to become bait for streamers who are trying to build defenses against churn.

I really appreciate the higher frequency of podcasts- good work!

Ethan,
Which Philly podcast were you on?
