I believe Twitter pugilist Tim Kawakami also predicted that even after Purdy signed his new deal the Niners would have tons of salary cap room in the first few years. He also brought up some interesting points about how the owners have to put some of the guaranteed money into escrow or something like that (I haven’t checked the details on that - going off memory).
Ethan asked what I kinda assume was a tongue-in-cheek question of whether or not NFL reporters are dumber than the NBA. That seems to be based on the discourse related to contracts between the two. The 49er bros push back that the NFL reporters aren't dumb (totally smart, dude!) and it's because the fans don't have time to hear about or understand the nuance.
The bros then go on to admit that "no one" knows how the Saints can operate with the Salary Cap nor how QBR is calculated. I, uh, don't think that's an issue because of their readership. I don't think they understand how the NFL's Salary Cap functions and just use the "yo it's complicated" schtick to make it seem like it is complicated instead of admitting they don't understand much of it.
I think across the board for fan understanding of contract related issues, the NBA is hands down ahead of the NFL. At the very top of highly engaged CBA nerd sport fans, NBA and NFL are probably indistinguishable but once you move down towards your highly engaged fans to casual fans the NBA dominates the NFL on this aspect. I think that mostly reflects the content available to fans and the NFL media hardly put any effort into this aspect. And I don't think this is an issue of complexity or the number of players on rosters because NHL fans/media are probably better than the NBA on average. Their sites like CapGeek (RIP) and CapFriendly/CapWages/PuckPedia are pretty cutting edge and the media seem to grasp contract negotiation issues.
Great conversation. And as mentioned at the end, whenever Dieter is on Larry, that is maybe the best 49ers content around. They are so perfect together.

Please do more Niners / NFL content!

The Nate Duncan comp is a high bar. +1 for cross-sport comparison.
That comp is so strong that I subscribed to their channel. Nate Duncan is the best.
