Famous German soccer fan FreddyLA7, who became a Twitter/X sensation with his cheery exploration of Americana during this World Cup, has apparently been bullied off the platform. It was a meteoric rise that reached an abrupt conclusion following Germany’s shocking elimination against Paraguay.

I can’t recall an anonymous person achieving fame and access so quickly. How does anyone in 2026 become a traveling celebrity, hosted by major sports teams, absent popular knowledge of their identity? The phenomenon stoked suspicion. Many people believed that Freddy and people like Freddy are part of an astroturfed pro-America campaign. “Something doesn’t add up” was a refrain you’d often see in reference to this mystery man with a Cristiano Ronaldo avatar. From the American perspective, something certainly didn’t add up. Nowadays nobody revels in viral attention, as Freddy did, while remaining anonymous.

Initial curiosity begat a more aggressive interrogation of a superficially anodyne figure. We will get into the theories that dogged Freddy’s image, but let me first propose a counter-theory that can make sense of this mysterious situation.
