As the Brits say, England are finished!

I saw various forms of this Twitter/X joke about England’s collapse against Argentina in the World Cup semifinal:

Prevent defense loses you games in every version of football.

That’s funny, but also…fascinating? Beyond sharing a name, and 11-on-11 setup, these sports are famously different. Theoretically, a non-soccer-obsessed American football fan shouldn’t have any insight into why England coughed up a late 1-0 lead. And yet…it all makes sense because this is a general strategic problem across sport. Apparently you don’t need to be an expert to figure out why the experts repeatedly snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
