Subscriber DF sent me this post from a football fan about ESPN’s premier NFL insider:
Adam Schefter lost a lot of credibility over the course of the past 24 hours
DF added:
His tweet feels like a “Straussian” / “Strauss-forward” Ron Burgundy blowing into his conch shell. From the idea of “credibility” (for someone just being early on press releases!)… and now to the “value” of announcing press releases will happen!
Some of you probably don’t know what this refers to. Beyond Schefter himself, I believe this story is about how we’ve entered into a new sports insider phase, for good or for ill. Adam Schefter has apparently transitioned from merely reporting news items to floating prediction-market relevant possibilities. It’s resulted in outrage and yet, I have to say, I prefer this modality of insiderdom to the mostly useless status quo that’s preceded it. Here’s what happened, and why sports “reporting” will never be the same.
